If you like shopping, you're going to love Gran Canaria!
The big centres on the Gran Canaria
provides a multitude of possibilities and
provides pleasant satisfaction for the
modern consumer. |
|
|
A Duty Free mecca, your electrical goods, cigarettes, wines, beers and
spirits, leather wear and designer clothes are all available at
discounted prices.
Everything
is more expensive in the south than in the north where there are not so
many tourists. If you want to shop you should go to one of the big
shopping malls. The closest to the south is Atlantico in Vecindario,
close to the airport. Here you can find a great variety of shops,
restaurants, bars and cinemas.
In Las Palmas you find the big Las Arenas
right next to the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium on Las Canteras. And on the
other side of the city, near the harbour, you find the newer El Muelle
that also have discos. The street Mesa y Lopez is famous for it's shops
and shopping malls, and of course there is the big shopping street Calle
Mayor de Triana in the south of Las Palmas. About five minutes drive
from Las Palmas you find the big 7 Palmas and El Corte Inglés right next
to each other.
If you are interested in local crafts, clothes or food you
should go to one of the markets that are held every week in many cities.
For those who live in Playa del Ingles and Maspalomas it can often be
better to shop in San Fernando, that lies close to the highway north of
Maspalomas. This is the place where many locals live, and the prices are
lower here.
Some bigger shops and stores may be closed on Sundays in but the
general opening hours are 10.00 - 20.00, with a few taking the
customary siesta between 13.30 and 16.30..
Supermarkets are usually open between 10.00 - 22.00, although in the
tourist resorts they might be open from 08.00 - 23.00 or 24.00
There are ATMs (automated cash machines) all over the resorts and, as in
other countries, guard your PIN number.
When using your credit cards in the tourist resorts, again guard your
number if the store is using the new system, or ensure that the payment
slip is correctly filled in before you sign it.
Below some of the biggest shopping centres
on Gran Canaria. |

shops but you can walk around.
It also
boasts an outdoor dance floor with live music most evenings
where you can waltz the night away (literally), and plenty
of bars and restaurants.
The Kasbah Centre is more for young people and the Plaza
Shopping Centre is where you go to hear the latest
international music.
The Kasbah basically forms one big centre along with the
Plaza and Metro Centres.

The Plaza
Shopping Centre has a large number of shops open during the

is underground and the bars are arranged in a
semi-circle around a central circle reached by escalators.
Good shopping in the Plaza center by day though, including a Visanta Centre and they have an excellent
reputation in retailing electrical goods, offering a money
back promise for the duration of your holiday if you're not
satisfied with your purchase and give European guarantees.
They're recommended to clients of major tour operators.

Centro Comercial
Metro
Avda. Italia, s/n - Playa del Inglés
35100 San Bartolomé de Tirajana
Tel.
Opening hours: 24 h. |
|
One of the best of
a dozen or so centres in
Playa del Ingles is probably the Metro Centre not that far
from the north end of Playa del Inglés' beach (and where all
the nightlife is). Really good choice of shops but the
owners are expecting tourists so you don't always get the
best price or deal, even if you are spoilt for choice.

 |
Centro Comercial Gran Chaparral
Avda de Gran Canaria,
Playa del Ingles
Opening hours: 24 h. |
|
Once known as "the English Centre", the Gran
Chaparral now also very popular with the Dutch. It has a large
range of British, Dutch and Scandinavian bars and
restaurants, many of which show the football and the soaps.
It could never be described as pretty but it is a good place
to go for a good breakfast. There's also a couple of bike
shops renting cycles and motorbikes.

35100 San Bartolomé de Tirajana
Tel. 928 77 35 14
Opening hours: 24 h. |
|
The Tropical shopping centre by the main
Playa del Ingles bus station has a good mix of shops,
including a "Fundgrube" which sells perfumes and gifts, as
well as restaurants. The advantage of the Tropical is the

Dunes from the restaurant terraces.

Centro Comercial Anexo II
Paseo Marítimo, Playa del Inglés
35100 San Bartolomé de Tirajana |
|
Anexo II is located at the
north end of Playa del Inglés
and right on the beach front. All this is beach shops,
restaurants and bars all by the beach. Anexo II is a very busy place by day and by
night. The beach here goes on for 6 km and this is the only
part with restaurants by it, as well as the only water
sports being here too so very much the place to be for a
brilliant beach & holiday atmosphere by night and by day.

Centro Comercial in
San Fernando |
 |
Bellavista
Partera Leonorita, s/n (San Fernando)
35100 San Bartolomé de Tirajana
Tel. 928 77 63 89 |
|
This is the
Canarian district and we recommend that you shop there instead of
places like Yumbo and Cita. The prices vary but are usually lower
than anywhere else. The difference can be up to 50%! Its
worth it to take a look there. The merchants there will also
not cheat on you, what you see is what you get and prices
are always displayed. As well as the large, local
supermarkets (Hyperdino in the Bellavista
centre boasts the cheapest prices on Gran Canaria) there's a
huge choice of every other type of shop also. Avenida de
Galdar is a good street to look along and just in front of
it there are two commercial centres aimed for residents
rather than tourists.

This is
situated in the centre of the resort and consists of three
continuous phases. Whilst accesses are via steps, there are
also wheelchair ramps.
The upper floor contains the
majority of the restaurants, disco bars and clubs, while the
ground floor houses shops, bars and banks. It is here that
the larger supermarkets, Netto and Spar are situated,
although many smaller ones are scattered around the resort
and the other two centres Europa Centre and Agua de Perra as
well as some small privately owned outlets.
On the lower ground you will find a small selection of
shops, another large supermarket, a pharmacy and the Bureau
de Change / Tourist Office, where you can pick up information
on tours, etc.. Watch out also for the various kiosks and
stands around the resort which give discounts on all kinds
