Car hire transport companies are
abundant around Gran Canaria and offer an extremely affordable way
to explore the island. Many people choose to rent a car when
visiting Gran Canaria, so that they have the freedom to travel when
and where they wish.
When renting a car on Gran Canaria, drivers
must be at least 21 years of age at some places up to 25 years of
age. Small cars often offer the best
value for money, although older cars can be particularly cheap. On Gran Canaria, cars must always drive on the right-hand side of the
road.
If you want
to rent a motorcycle, moped
or scooter, they are normally let through the same shops,
that let cars at the resort.
By parking, the blue colour on the street means, that
you have to pay
for the parking most of the day. Information's bout parking fees is on
the parking meter. A yellow line means, that parking is prohibited.
Speed
limits in Spain are as follows: 20 kph in residential
areas, 50 kph in built-up areas, 90 kph in country roads,
100 kph in dual carriageways, 120 kph on motorways, 80 kph
for cars towing a trailer on divided highways and 70 kph on
other roads.
The use of safety belt is obligatory - also on the back seat.
Unlawful parked
cars is removed by the police and a considerable fine is
unavoidable.
As of May 1. 2004 there is
passed a new traffic law that is sharpening the security measures on the roads.
It includes for instant the use of Internet, TV, Video and DVD - and of course
the hand held telephone & drivers smoking. Only GPS and hands free Mobil-installation is permitted
when driving.
Installations in the car, with the purpose of disclosing speed control is also
forbidden, and it is not permitted to signal other motorists about a traffic
control.
In the future there must be 2 warning triangles in the car.
Children under 12 Years of age, measuring
below 1,5 meter have to be kept in children seats/chairs.
Reflex waist coats - and now it's time to buy at least
one reflex waist coat, to use if you have to get out of the car during a
stop or traffic accident.
From. July 1, 2004
there webcams are placed in order to supervise the Traffic in Las Palmas
activated by built in radar control, so you
better keep the speed limits, if you don't want the vacation to be too
expensive.
From the 10. August 2005
the fines rise for driving without the safety belt and if you are talking Mobil, while driving, if it isn't a hands free. Payment at once, so remember to have some cash in the pocket.
