Presa de Chira
Cercados de Araña
35369 San Bartolomé de Tirajana |
|
|
Gran Canaria has an extensive
network of dams and reservoirs with a view to making the
most of all the rainfall here. Presa de Chira, the largest
dam on the island, has lost part of its past splendour, but
is still a magical place to spend a few days relaxing. You
can reach it from San Bartolomé de Tirajana or Ayacata, as
it's half-way between the two.
Here the Jeep Safari normally comes by, and in the summer
there's a possibility to bath in the lake. |

Mundo
Aborigen is an outdoor Museum on at least 110.000 m². In
a protected National Park, a setting of incomparable
beauty, and through a carefully planned itinerary we
will se before our very eyes the different aspects of
their life: the social hierarchy, the world of magic and
religion, burial rites, the most deeply rooted social
customs, different types of dwellings, ornamentation,
manual skills, food, agriculture and live animals.
All of which is presented with more than one hundred
life-size figures showing the aborigines in a setting of
a large variety of endemic flora which make the visit
even more pleasant. In order to pay special attention to
the most important aspects, we have created a small
archaeological museum which, together with the different
shows and demonstrations of the island's sports,
complete this fascinating visit.
Mundo
Aborigen has been declared, "A place of Cultural,
Social and Historical Interest" by the Canarian
Government.
Unfortunately there are no shows or such, as was the
case in the beginning, and the adjoining kiosk is
closed, so you'll have to bring your own food and drink. |

The south of Gran
Canaria is a barren, arid landscape combed with many dramatic
ravines and is easily accessible from the main tourist resorts. If
you follow the small road from Palmitos Park to the south of the
Island you will eventually arrive at the village of Ayagaures in the
Barranco de la Data. Here you can see the dams over the adjacent
reservoir, 'Embalse de Ayagaures' and, hopefully, enjoy a leisurely
break in the shady square next to the church. |

Pico de las Nieves is with it's 1949 m the highest mountain on Gran
Canaria. |
|
|
|
|
This name means
'well of snow', and in the old days people used to gather snow,
collect it in a well and use it as some kind of refrigerator.
This place is situated close to Pico de las Nieves that is the
highest mountain on Gran Canaria.
It's not so often that it snows here, but when it did the people
came from many of the nearby areas to put the snow in the well.
There is an amazing view to the south of the island from here. It's
incredible to stand in snow and look down at the beach of
Maspalomas! |

 |
Parque Rural del Nublo |
|
|
Is the biggest protected natural area on the Island. The area is 26.307 ha.
about the same size as La Gomera, and it is spread
out between 8 Municipalities, Tejeda, La Aldea de San Nicolás, Mogán, San Bartolomé de
Tirajana, Artenara, San Mateo, Valleseco and Moya |

Fataga and Barranco de Fataga also named "Valley of
the thousand Palm Trees" is certainly a place to be
explored. It is a picture postcard sort of place and a showpiece of
a traditional Canarian village, surrounded by orchards, vines, palm
trees and smart newly white washed cottages.
There are a number of well stocked souvenir shops on the main road
and they and they also stock locally produced wine. Aim towards the
well maintained village church where you can sit in shady square for
a while and absorb the beautiful surroundings. |
