preserved natural area, which is a popular winter place for
birds. |

Dunas de Maspalomas
was declared preserved area in 1982
and is a 4 square kilometres dune
landscape, situated on the South
Point of Gran Canaria. A dune landscape
which is to be experienced barefooted. Sand desert - mini Sahara.
The dunes can be up to 10 m high, and it is easy to imagine, haw
easy it can be to get lost in Sahara without water.
The dunes consists of real coral sand washed in from the reefs
through thousands of years, and not as it is often told, sand flown
to the area from Sahara. |

A entertaining experience is a
Camel Safari in the sand desert, so you can feel how it is to be in
Sahara. Camels can carry between 250 and 700 kg. and they walks
between 4 and 6 km/h. Camels can gallop 35 km/h over a distance of
10 km, before de become dull and need to have the body cooled - but
of course, we also need to think of the last, and bring enough
water.
The price is 10 € for a trip of 30 min. in the dunes, and paying 30 €
you get a longish expedition, good food and a visit in the Camel Parque with small Camels.

Here you will find a land
strip with 17 km of wonderful coastline with sand dunes, wide, sandy
beaches, shallow waters and an excellent all year round climate. This is a
paradise for beach lovers and family holidays. The upmarket Maspalomas
resort, with smart hotels, luxury residences and the largest golf course on
the island, is separated from Playa del Inglés by a spectacular stretch of
dunes, which have been declared natural protected area, allowing only the
crossing on foot and on camels. These dunes provide a habitat for a number
of rare plant species, some of which are only to be found in the Canaries,
having managed to survive in this arid environment. |
