History |
|
|
The delightful town of
Arucas sits beneath a dormant volcano on the northern coast of Gran
Canaria, and is one of the most popular places for tourists to visit.
The neat town is dominated by the majestic Church of San Juan Bautista,
carved in stone by local workers. The town is also the centre of sugar
and rum production on the island and visitors are welcome at the Fabrica
y Museo del Ron to witness how sugar cane is turned into rum. It is
possible to take a short walk out of the town to the Montana de Arucas
viewpoint for a panoramic look at the northern coastline.
Arucas
was one of the 10 principalities in which Gran Canaria was divided. In the
area around the City the aborigines lived in caves, and was among other
things living from farming and cultivation and wheat. Under the conquest of
Gran Canaria in 1478 the City was totally stripped, but was rebuilt about
1480. From the 15th Century and till today the most important agricultural
product has been sugar beets. The Sugar beets are considered some of the
best in the World, was used by the aborigines to produce Rum.
Through the years there has been and still is produced sugar beets, maize,
cocoa, corn, bananas and grapes.
Later on the city opened their own quarry and the local greyisblue lava
stones is still used, and can be seen in many houses in the city, and not
least on the Cathedral. |
